The National Testing Agency issued a notice on Tuesday 20th April 2021 which announces the postponement of UGC NET exam dates which were originally scheduled to be conducted between May 2nd and May 17th of this year. The University Grants Commission (UGC) National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted by the National Testing Agency for assessing the eligibility of Assistant Professors in universities & to award Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).
“Looking at the present situation of the pandemic and also taking into account the safety and well-being of the candidates and examination functionaries, it has been decided to postpone the UGC-NET December 2020 cycle (May 2021) examination,” the NTA said in an official statement.
The notice issued by the NTA specified that the revised dates for the UGC NET December 2020 (May 2021) Examination will be announced at a later date and applicants will be informed about the same minimum 15 days before the examination commences.
Union Minister for Education Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank also tweeted regarding the postponement of the UGC NET Decemeber 2020 (May 2021) cycle exams and assured students the UGC NET exam will be scheduled when the situation improves enough for it to be safe for conducting the exam. As always, the health and well-being of the students is the first priority for the NTA and Union Minister of Education. Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank tweeted saying – “Keeping in mind the safety and wellbeing of candidates and exam functionaries during Covid-19 outbreak, I have advised @DG_NTA to postpone the UGC-NET Dec 2020 cycle (May 2021) exams.” He also requested the public to stay safe, take all the necessary precautions and wear a mask at all times when outdoors.
The UGC NET exam used to be conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) till June 2018 after which from December 2018 it has since been conducted by the National Testing Agency in 84 subjects across 90+ locations in India.
