The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that the 10th board exams will be cancelled for the students studying in 10th standard during for the academic year 2021-2022. The announcement also stated that the 12th board exams scheduled to begin from the first week of May have been postponed until further notice. The decision on when to schedule the 12th standard board exams will be decided on June 1st after a review meeting to discuss the conditions in the country and if they are safe enough to conduct exams at a later date.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister NarendraModi. Union Minister of Education – Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, the Cabinet Secretary, school and education board higher officials were also in attendance for the meeting.The Education Minister stated that the board exams for class 12 scheduled to be held from May 4th 2021 till June 14th 2021 will be postponed and a review meeting has been scheduled for June 1st 2021 and any decision taken or updates on the exam will be shared accordingly. At least 15 days of notice will be provided to the students before the examinations begin.
The Union Minister for Education also said that the 10th board exams are now officially cancelled for students of 10th class. The results for the 10th standard board exams will be calculated and announced on the basis of an objective criterion which will be determined by the CBSE board. Once the 10th standard results are announced, any student who is dissatisfied with their marks will be able to appear for the exam when the conditions improve enough for exams to be held.
Prime Minister NarendraModi said during the meeting that the health, safety and well-being of the students is the government’s top priority. The decision has been taken keeping in mind the best interests of students to ensure their health is taken care of while their academic attentiveness remains unharmed.
A large number of students, parents, teachers, board officials and politicians had been asking the government to cancel or postpone the board exams in view of the sudden spike in positive Covid-19 cases across the country. A large number of states had to order educational institutions to be closed again, in few states schools & colleges were re-shut after being operational only for a matter of weeks. The Education Minister also specified that the 12th board exams will be held at the same time in every state as CBSE has an all-India presence which makes it necessary for the exams to be held simultaneously throughout the country.
The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CICSE) that governs the ICSE & ISC board examinations is yet to take a decision on postponing or cancelling the 10th& 12th board exams. The class 10 board exams for ICSE students are currently scheduled to be held from May 5th 2021 to June 7th 2021. The board exams for 12th class ISC students have already begun on April 8th 2021. The CISCE is expected to announce their decision on postponing or cancellation of exams in regards to the rise in Covid-19 cases in the country by Friday evening i.e. the evening of 16th April 2021.
Opposition leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra& Rahul Gandhi of the Indian National Congress have been vocal in asking the ruling government to postpone the board exams for the students in wake of the high rise in positive Covid-19 cases.
