The new edition of Apple’s iPhone models – the iPhone 13 range was announced by Apple during their keynote event on September 14th 2021. The new iPhone 13 range will have 4 models – the iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro & iPhone 13 Pro Max. The design of the new iPhones hasn’t changed much compared to the previous iPhone 12 models. The phones have flat edges with rounded corners as seen on the iPhone 12. The phones also retain the IP68 protection rating for the metal body design. The notch is smaller by 20% and the phones have become very slightly thicker by 0.25mm.
The display panels are called the Super Retina XDR displays which are basically Apple’s OLED display with ProMotion (variable refresh rate – only on the Pro models). The display sizes are 5.4” for the mini, 6.1” for the 13 & 13 Pro & 6.7” for Pro Max models. The panels are 28% brighter than last year’s phone and are capable of reaching 1200 nits peak brightness HDR. The display panels support Dolby Vision, HDR10 & HLG standards.
All the new iPhone 13 models have the latest Apple silicon handling the processor duties – the A15 Bionic chip which as usual is claimed to be the fastest chipset in any smartphone and it is one claim that might be true. The A15 gets 2 high performance cores & 4 high-efficiency cores and the chip is built on a 5nm manufacturing node. The GPU has 4 cores on the 13 & Mini models but gets 5 cores on the Pro & Pro Max models. The new A15 has a new 16 core Neural Engine too, powering features such as on-device voice and image recognition and other advanced machine learning tasks. On top of that, there is a new ISP on board, twice the amount of cache, as well as a new display engine and new video encoders and decoders. The iPhone 13 models are all 5G ready.
The 4 new iPhone 13 models get the same 2 12MP wide & ultra-wide cameras with f/1.6 & f/2.4 apertures and new sensors, the 12MP wide lens gets OIS too. The Pro & Pro Max models get an additional 12 MP Telephoto lens with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) & 6x Optical Zoom. The front camera is a 12MP TrueDepth selfie camera which comes with the much-revered Centre-Stage feature which was first seen on the M1 chip devices. All the phones get 4K HDR 60fps video shooting capabilities but no ProRes shooting at 4K 30fps for the 128GB storage models.
Apple reports improved battery life across the whole range thanks to bigger batteries & better efficiency optimization when switching from LTE to 5G networks. The new iPhones also support more network bands & carriers.
