The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) released its tentative academic calendar for the academic year 2021-2022 on Thursday 6th May. The 2021-2022 academic calendar was released to the public on the official website of AICTE – aicte-india.org where anyone can view it. The Academic Calendar is released annually by the AICTE and it serves as a guideline for universities to follow and perform the mentioned activities before the date specified on the academic calendar. The academic calendar lists the important dates for deadlines of tasks that universities under AICTE-UGC need to complete.
The notice issued contains important dates for the 2021-22 academic year for technical institutions under AICTE. The last date for grant of approval to technical institutions is 30th June 2021, the last date for grant of affiliation by universities/boards is 15th July 2021 and the last date for completion of the first round of counselling for seat allotment in colleges is 31st August 2021. The date for the last date of the second round of counselling is 9th September 2021 while the date for commencing of classes for the academic year is 15th September 2021. The pdf of the Academic Calendar of 2021-2022 can be viewed here.
The dates on the academic calendar will come as a shock to the college and university officials as the schedule is similar to a calendar year without considering the effects of the delays caused due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in the country. The 12th standard board exams have been postponed and no news of their schedule is out yet, if the 12th board exams are conducted in June/July it will take a couple of months after the exams for the results to be declared. Once the results are declared, it will take some time to arrange counselling sessions keeping in mind the Covid-19 safety protocols.
During last year, for the academic year 2020-2021, the last date for the 2nd round of counselling was 30th November 2020 due to adjustments made to the academic year schedule caused by the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown. Take the academic calendar released currently on the AICTE website for the academic year 2021-22 with a pinch of salt as the schedule might be changed many times between now and the commencement of classes for the academic year 2021-22 which will be affected by the 2nd wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India. The AICTE notice has already extended the last date for grant of affiliation by universities from the usual date of 15th May every year to 15th July this year. There are also rumours that universities are required to conduct a physical inspection of the applying colleges before it can grant affiliation to colleges for the academic year 2021-22.
